Richmond is an affluent part of the capital with serious royal connections. Henry I lived here briefly when it was known as Sceon and in 1299 Edward I moved his entire court to the manor-house here. It was here that William Wallace was executed in 1305, marking the end of the Scottish uprising. Richard the II continued the royal links to Sheen until his wife died, at which point he ordered that the manor house was destroyed.
However, Henry VII brought the royals back here, building Richmond Palace here in 1501 and the town took on the name, in memory of his Yorkshire roots. Thanks to the way the river Thames meanders, although it is on the south bank this area is actually to the east of the water.
